
Dr. Ammar Morad
Childhood cancer is the second most common cause of death in children in the United States. However, for the 40 plus known cases in southwest Louisiana there is help nearby. In continuing with its dedication to pediatric excellence Womens & Childrens Hospital is pleased to welcome Ammar Morad, MD to its staff. Dr. Morad is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist who will work to diagnose and treat children with cancer and blood disorders.
Dr. Morad states that the three most common types of cancer found in children are leukemia, brain tumors and lymphoma. Treatment of these disorders can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation. According to the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology survival rates for most childhood cancers are very favorable. Almost all children are now treated with curative intent and in most cases treatments are successful. In fact, Dr. Morad states that cure rates for all childhood cancers are approximately 75 percent. Some signs and symptoms parents should be aware of are:
- morning headaches and/or vomiting
- paleness
- fatigue
- bruising
- lump in the neck
- mass in the abdomen
- bone pain
- limping
- swollen face and neck
- white dot in eye
- swollen eye
- chronic drainage from ear
- vaginal bleeding
- continued unexplained weight loss.
Dr. Morad also treats children with blood disorders such as hemophilia, sickle cell disease and bleeding disorders.
Dr. Morad completed his residency training in pediatrics at Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin in 1989 and his fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Childrens Cancer Center in 1993. He was an instructor in pediatric hematology-oncology at Texas Childrens Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine as well as an assistant professor in pediatric hematology-oncology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo, Texas before opening his own private practice in Dallas in the year 2000.
