Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Should your baby develop any problems and require critical care, Women’s & Children’s Hospital is uniquely equipped to take care of your newborn.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the only unit in Acadiana designated with a Level III Regional status. The distinction of Level III Regional status is the highest possible designation and is shared by only eight NICUs in the state of Louisiana. The distinction of Regional status requires that we provide the support of pediatric specialists including surgery, cardiology, pulmonology, neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, and more. What this means simply is that we are more experienced and better equipped to care for premature and critically ill newborns.

In addition to our highly skilled neonatologists, our NICU is staffed with neonatal nurse practitioners who work in collaboration with our neonatologists to provide 24-hour care. Our unit is also staffed with RNs and LPNs who are specially trained to assist in caring for premature and critically ill infants.

Women’s & Children’s Hospital also has a highly skilled Neonatal Transport Team that can transport critically ill newborns to our Level III Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit utilizing either ground or air transportation.
