Women’s Physical Therapy, Continence and Pelvic Floor Disorders Center
Women’s & Children’s Hospital is proud to provide a resource for those suffering from incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction, a problem all too common but often thought of as something you must live with. What can start as a little leakage can become a much bigger problem if left untreated. There are treatments available for many of the conditions that cause incontinence and pelvic floor weakness, providing help for a problem many are too embarrassed to even talk about. While some cases do require surgery, incontinence can more often be treated with medication and through physical therapy. With two specially trained physical therapists on staff, several different treatment approaches are available, including:
- Biofeedback to help the patient become aware of her body’s functioning by tracking the contractions of the bladder and urethral muscles.
- Exercises designed to strengthen or retrain the pelvic floor and sphincter muscles to reduce stress leakage.
- Electric stimulation to strengthen muscles in the lower pelvis in order to stabilize overactive muscles and stimulate contraction of the urethral muscles.
- Bladder retraining designed to alter the bladder’s schedule for storing and emptying urine, effective for urge and overflow incontinence.
